Butler champions strategic initiatives, leads transformational programs and reduces costs through automation.

John Butler
is a published author, speaker and advisor serving the technology and media sectors since 1990 with extensive experience leading innovation, leveraging technology and pioneering organizational change at media powerhouses such as Reed Elsevier, Time Inc., Ziff Davis and Forbes. Butler has an accomplished career in corporate IT and line of business management with a proven track record of clearly articulating vision, championing common goals and driving transformation through collaboration. He has demonstrated a keen ability to simplify complex information, present actionable summaries, develop tactical plans and lead programs that exceed requirements and reduce costs.

Reed Elsevier hired Butler to improve the ROI of multiple CRM deployments – including Siebel and Salesforce.com. Butler presented his recommendations – for example, implementing customer metrics such as Net Promoter Score (NPS) – to the CEOs of Reed Elsevier, Elsevier and LexisNexis. The subsequent adoption of NPS by every business unit globally was a first for this multinational media conglomerate.

For Reed Elsevier, Butler helped establish a global technology shared service and optimize its performance using ITIL and balanced scorecard metrics to demonstrate progress and drive continuous improvement. Performance management such as maintaining 99.99% uptime is mission critical at Reed Elsevier. The multi-billion dollar book and journal company successfully transformed from mostly print sales to generating 70% of its revenue online.

Time Inc., publisher of TIME, Fortune, People, InStyle and Sports Illustrated, challenged Butler to source and build a cross-media publishing solution that could outperform the leading solution at the time, the Quark QPS editorial system. He successfully proposed a Time Inc. joint venture with Adobe by demonstrating the alignment of their business strategies and technology roadmaps.

After winning the buy-in from Time Inc. chief executives as well as Fortune’s managing editor and Adobe’s CEO, Butler led a build and test prototyping initiative that included Adobe senior developers and key change agents within Fortune magazine’s editorial, design and production departments. The solution was a success at Fortune and before the products were launched to the market, Butler had the unique honor of unveiling Adobe InDesign and InCopy to Adobe’s internal staff as the keynote speaker at their event.

As other apps such as Photoshop became interoperable, the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) not only changed the game, it set a new and enduring standard for cross-media publishing enthusiastically embraced by media companies and professionals worldwide.

Butler is a published author who has written numerous articles on emerging technologies published in the trusted Seybold Report, a former Ziff Davis trade journal. Companies based investment decisions and product development on Butler’s articles and advisory services.
